THE DISTRICT 6 HEARTLAND
The district 6 community, has the least business economic revenue of all the districts and has the highest concentration of minority neighborhoods in the city. With the purposeful and deliberate intention of the District’s elected leadership along with like-minded business owners, the Heartland is beginning to experience a renaissance in creating economic parity for business owners and residents. Although glimpses of progress are being realized, intentional and sustainable capital investment is critical to effectively confront district issues of public safety, blight removal and entrepreneurial economic progress.
NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION EFFORT
The Heartland revitalization effort continues to be vital for economic growth and community strengthening. The effort supports the healthy development of a vibrant community and assists local businesses in attracting customers from within and externally with focus on retention of consumers and their spending within the District.
OCCUR serves as a facilitator and intermediary bringing together neighborhood merchants/businesses, residents, government and community-based organizations to strengthen and stimulate the economic development potential of emerging communities in partnership with Oakland City Council Member Desley Brooks. The Neighborhood Revitalization program provides monthly merchant meetings to help empower local business owners through various networking activities and seminars. Experts provide FREE business development, finance, and human resource presentations that provide opportunities for merchants to maximize their business development goals.
